In 1968 the gates of the first Flintstone Park opened in Kelowna BC. In its life of 30 years approximately 2,100,000 kids of all ages roamed about the park built to mirror the life of the famous clubbed foot Fred Flintstone and all his wacky sidekicks. With only two other parks like it in the world, the sight where 40’ Fred stood visible from the bustling Hwy 97 became a famous landmark to anyone trying to find their way through Kelowna. In 1995 Victor Projects purchased the park. After many unsuccessful negotiations with Hanna Barbara over the rights to Fred Flintstone, the park was closed in 1998.With 40’ Fred now residing at the family ranch, building began on whatis now known as McCurdy Corner. Although our dinosaur lovin friend is no longer visible from the hwy, his lasting legacy is…. In the heart of McCurdy Corner, bright red block letters spell FREDDY’S. For those of us who remember the park, or spent a Saturday morning with the Flintstones, or even saw the Flintstone Movies, one thing was always the same….. where there was Fred, there was Food, Beer and Bowling.
